Tobias Tietze (lute instruments)
featuring works by Valentin Strobel
The first half of the 17th century was a period of profound change for the lute. New tunings and playing techniques expanded the instrument’s tonal and harmonic possibilities and brought about lasting changes to lute music. With the Halle-based lutenist Valentin Strobel (1611–1678),
the spotlight falls on a musical figure who experienced this transformation first-hand and incorporated it into his own work. Works by Strobel and his contemporary René Mésangeau offer an insight into this fascinating era straddling tradition and innovation.
