The "European Day of Early Music" takes Johann Sebastian Bach's birthday as an opportunity to celebrate early music on 21 March. With concerts, events and happenings taking place simultaneously throughout Europe, an international network of cultural institutions is drawing attention to Europe's wide-ranging thousand-year-old historical musical heritage.

The Handel House Foundation is taking part this year with a free lunchtime concert at 12.00 noon, followed by an architectural history tour of Handel's birthplace, one of the city's most famous buildings, located in the centre of Halle. This is undoubtedly due to its impressive exterior: the striking façade, the towering mansard roof and the idyllic inner courtyard. The eventful history of the building complex is barely recognisable. Museum employee Karl Altenburg sheds some light on the building history of the Handel House and accompanies visitors into the vaulted cellar and the impressive Bohlenstube.

At the lunchtime concert, students from the Institute of Music at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg will take visitors on a half-hour journey through the soundscapes of the Baroque era. A concert experience that is designed for the length of a lunch break and can be easily integrated into the working day.
