Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. Individual building blocks are inserted, removed or modified at an interface. Like the CRISPR-Cas9 gene scissors, the band of three Leipzig musicians Paula Wünsch, Simon Lucaciu and Jan-Einar Groh cuts its way through the anatomy of time. Stylistically, the trio ventures a balancing act between impetuous, stumbling beats and the spontaneity and gestures of the early days of free jazz in the middle of the last century. The compositions are inspired by contemporary and more traditional artists such as Kit Downes, Petter Eldh, Joachim Kühn and Eric Dolphy.
In their new project ‘Terraforming’, the trio dedicates itself to the big questions in microscopic and cosmic dimensions: Do we have the right to cut around in genes or to ‘terraform’ lifeless planets, i.e. make them habitable, should we ever be technically able to do so? It is about the interplay between artificiality and naturalness, intuition and constructedness, manipulation and originality, composition and improvisation.
