Over many centuries – up to the mid-20th century – the Stadtsingechor was the mainstay of liturgical music in Halle. Every week, it performed the liturgy and figural music in the city’s three main churches – the Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen and the parish churches of St. Ulrich and St. Maurice (Moritzkirche). Since its return to the Marktkirche in 2004, the choir has kept up this tradition in a new way: around six to eight times a year, it sings a motet service for the Saturday evening vespers. In conjunction with the parish pastors and cantors, the Stadtsingechor performs these musical services with sacred music of various periods and styles. As part of the Handel Festival, you can hear works for a double-choir and compositions with an instrumental accompaniment – including two impressive choruses from Handel’s Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline.
