Four thousand singers performing Messiah were scarcely enough in London in 1883, when national feeling was at its peak. But at its premiere in Dublin in 1742, Handel wanted just a small chorus and an ensemble of strings – to create a marvellous sound he needed not so much as an oboe. But trumpets for the Hallelujah Chorus – that went without saying! We know of all this from Donald Burrows, who has made a close study of the performance history. In London, Italian opera had fallen from favour, and Handel returned to the music of Buxtehude and his teacher, Zachow, as a result. And so this performance, which rediscovers the exquisite pleasure of gentle lines and new-found fervour, promises to be full of charm.
