Why do we celebrate Baroque operas and cantatas in which women are reduced to a handful of stereotypes and measured only in relation to men? While equality and sexism are the subject of heated debate in society, in classical music crass clichés are still being staged: the jealous Fury, the naïve bimbo or the saint. Must it be so? Together with actor Alexandra Marisa Wilcke, Ensemble Arava tries something new – in an hour-long performance of music and words. Because although outdated role models ultimately harm us all, it is difficult to free ourselves of them – and there are many, striking parallels with the present.  And so the women portrayed in song on the stage are given a nuanced voice, showing how works that we love can be performed in a contemporary way.
