Protestant hymnals have been around for 500 years. The Babst Hymnal of 1545 was a record for Luther’s supporters of the hymns from his immediate circle. The Freylingshausen Hymnal, the main hymnbook of the Pietist movement, was published in Halle in 1704. Although G. F. Handel had moved to Hamburg shortly before, he must have grown up with these hymns. Concluding their work in and for Halle, Dr. Wolfgang Miersemann and Dr. Hans-Otto Korth, two distinguished hymnology researchers who have organised a number of research projects and conferences in conjunction with the Francke Foundations and musicology experts in Halle, are holding an academic conference.
