Drag for Young People

Workshop

Want to dress up, make up and play different gender roles? Drag as a political and artistic act demonstrates that gender is constructed, that we can break with the gender attributed to us and our bodies and consciously play with the way gender is portrayed. We are all continuously confronted with rigid gender roles and stereotypes – at school, at work, in the family and in the (social) media. In this workshop, CHICKS* questions these roles, picks them apart and reconstructs them. In particular we look at the construction of the male image or images, with a focus on the persona of the drag king. With the aid of masks, costumes, body and movement, participants explore the different facets of their own identity and play with various expressions of gender. We paint glittering beards on our faces, click our heels on the ground, stuff our boxer shorts, paint our nails and become someone we/you don’t expect us to be.
