City of Lost Souls
Rosa von Praunheim’s cult queer musical City of Lost Souls (1983) paints a portrait of the colourful lives of a group of eccentric US cabaret performers. Drag queens, dancers and acrobats as well as figures from marginalised communities – including black, Jewish, gay and transgender people – seek social acceptance and creative freedom in Berlin. Rosa von Praunheim deliberately did without conventional professional actors, opting instead for real figures from the queer subculture, whose true biographies and experiences lend the film its particular authenticity.
