The programme ‘Vogelfrei - Jazz zwischen Bach, Brahms und Co.’ by Birdhouse Jazz shows that classical music and jazz are not mutually exclusive, but can complement and harmonise perfectly with each other. Lutz Funke and Carsten Nachtigall search for the ‘hidden jazz’ in the works of classical composers, bring it to the surface and spice it up with their own improvisations, arrangements and compositions. The interplay swings, blueses, inspires and simply flies over (time) boundaries without losing harmony and intensity: There are the Beatles next to a George Gershwin, while Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart awaits Duke Ellington next to Esbjörn Svensson. But Birdhouse Jazz doesn't just adorn itself with other people's music; original compositions also have a firm place in the repertoire.
