A young nobleman meets a middle-class girl: he is a pupil at a monastery school, she a beautiful young girl, and it is love at first sight. Such were the ingredients of the scandalous 18th-century novel: Manon Lescaut. Its author, Abbé Prévost d’Exiles, lived an adventurous life himself and in London also made the acquaintance of Handel. How might it have sounded it if the text had been transformed into operatic material earlier than the 19th century? This pasticcio by Attilio Cremonesi provides the answer. The reading of extracts from the novel combined with operatic arias and instrumental pieces by Handel and his French contemporary Jean-Philippe Rameau bring this dramatic love story to life.
