The Marseillaise of the Reformation

This concert is a jazzy homage to Martin Luther and Johann Walter, who wrote the first Protestant choral hymnbook in 1524. Drawing from this fund, pianist and arranger Jörg Leistner takes the time-honored melodies to a new level of sound. In a special arrangement, the "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" (A Mighty Fortress is Our God), described by Heinrich Heine as the "Marseillaise of the Reformation", can be heard.

The musical means used by FOUR STEPS are manifold and cannot be easily categorized into conventional ones. Spontaneous freedom is allowed in the play to give the unpredictable a chance. The arrangements are carried by the inspired improvisations of all four musicians. The result is a transformation of the music of the Reformation period into the present day.
