Every year, Handel’s Messiah with the well-known Hallelujah Chorus is traditionally performed by internationally renowned musicians. This year round, Wolfgang Katschner will conduct today’s most popular oratorio in its English version. When Handel premiered the oratorio on 13 April 1742, he must have known that he had composed a ground-breaking work. Even during his lifetime, a tradition of annual charity events grew up: from 1750 onwards, the work was performed almost every year without interruption in the chapel of the Foundling Hospital in London. With his famous choruses Handel knew how to impress and, above all, how to move hearts.
