Cantatas by George Frideric Handel for solo alto accompanied by the harpsichord are the focus of this unusual concert. The highpoint is the final piece: Amore uccellatore, a Handel work never yet performed in this form. This evening’s countertenor, Lawrence Zazzo, discovered it in a later copy, which was conserved in Cambridge. It tells of a male bird who is pursued by five women and Cupid. The sometimes very abrupt changes of key between the individual movements could indicate that when these cantatas were written, they were performed in instalments; the harpsichordist Guillermo Brachetta provides a bridge in the form of modulating improvisations. The programme also includes further cantatas for alto by Handel, all dating from his early Italian period. They are complemented in lively fashion by harpsichord works by François Couperin and others, and again by George Frideric Handel.
