In this gala concert, Magdalena Kožená and La Cetra Barockorchester Basel under the baton of Andrea Marcon offer us a programme all about “bewitched love”. Various love arias from the rich oeuvre of George Frideric Handel set the tone of the evening. In addition to these vocal jewels, a positively Italian feel permeates, as several instrumental works by contemporaries of Handel who were born and worked in Italy can also be heard: Arcangelo Corelli in an adaptation by Francesco Geminiani, as well as Alessandro Marcello and Francesco Maria Veracini. One special connection is that in 1714, the latter performed interval music as a violinist at the London King’s Theatre, where he must surely have met Handel. A truly bewitching gala concert with one of the best-known mezzo-sopranos of our time!
