What if Handel were alive today? Maybe he’d write pop songs – or film music. “He would be incredibly bold and inventive and explore new musical paths. And above all, he’d keep breaking his own rules,” jazz singer Efrat Alony is convinced. This is the idea behind her new project, Handel – Fast Forward, which in 2024 won an Opus Klassik in the category Classic without Limits. According to the jury, this album is “proof of Alony’s unique vision and creativity”. Together with the Vienna-based pianist Philipp Nykrin, Alony transforms arias from Handel’s Theodora, Ottone and Saul into a fascinating world of sound between Baroque and jazz. Improvisation, variation and the desire to create something new connect the two periods together. Alonys’s strikingly sombre voice is seductively poetic – hovering between strength and fragility, spirituality and groove. Handel – Fast Forward is  musical journey full of soul, freedom and imagination.
