A very special musical trip down the river: on the MS Händel II, the sounds of western Baroque music meet the rich musical sounds of Persia. Entitled Faszination Persien (“Persian Fascination”), the concert combines works by George Frideric Handel and Marin Marais with rarely heard Persian music from the 17th and 18th centuries – a dialogue between two cultures which are surprisingly similar in elegance and expression. The historian and composer Dimitrie Cantemir (1673–1723) collected contemporary and earlier music from the Ottoman Empire and Persia in a notation system he developed himself. His notated music documents a period which without him would have fallen into oblivion. Aboard the MS Händel II, Hamburger Ratsmusik and the Neoclassical Ensemble of Tehran paint a fascinating musical panorama in which the santur, tar and viola da gamba meet. A journey through the romantic Saale Valley that combines Baroque sounds with oriental poetry.
