What a brilliant and sensational debut: Rinaldo is the first opera that G. F. Handel 1711 staged in London. No wonder, then, that the composer revived this popular tale of chivalry with Rinaldo as its hero in 1731, and with his Second Academy staged a heavily revised version of it. In this new production of Handel’s Rinaldo at the Goethe Theatre in Bad Lauchstädt, the audience will see Xavier Sabata in two roles: a visible one, on the stage in the role of Rinaldo and an invisible one, as stage director. Xavier Sabata is one of the most sought-after countertenors and has delighted audiences all over Europe for many years. His “...rich and glorious tone, seemingly limitless breath control and a formidable dramatic sense” (Early Music News) is made for the role of Orlando. A role that was created in 1731 for Francesco Bernardi, known as Senesino, and which, with its challenging vocal demands is in good hands with Sabata. Because at the concert performance premiering this version of Rinaldo at the 2018 Handel Festival, the Spanish countertenor enthralled the audience. These excellent musicians and a splendid international ensemble of soloists will perform under the brilliant and sensitive baton of conductor Jan Tomasz Adamus.
