The 1922 Handel Festival at the Stadttheater Halle opened with Handel’s opera Orlando. It was the first time this romantic opera about the knight who lost his sanity for love could be heard since its premiere in London in 1733. The original performance was held on 27 January 1733, in the presence of the queen, in the King’s Theatre in London. The artistic director of Halle Opera, Walter Sutcliffe, said of Orlando that it was “one of the musically richest, emotionally and intellectually compelling and structurally most radical pieces I have ever encountered”. And so it is not surprising that he took charge of the direction of the new production of 2022. Arno Lücker judged the staging to be “one of the most coherent, cleverest Handel productions of recent times, which should also appeal to young people” (Opernwelt 7/22).
