Neue Residenz

Neue Residenz - Festsaal

The name „Neue Residenz“ dates from the seventeenth century, when the last administrator of the former archbishopric, Duke August of Saxony, moved his royal residence from the Moritzburg to here. The complex, constructed around an irregular courtyard between 1529 and 1541 under Cardinal Albrecht, was built originally as the „Neue Stift“ (New Bishopric). This two-storey building with Italian-style arcaded walks served the duke as a residential palace.
