With Il Messia, Handel’s best-known work will be performed in 2023 in an 18th-century arrangement that will surprise even connoisseurs of the early music scene: as early as 1768, the work that Handel composed in the summer of 1741 was performed in an Italian version in Florence. Thanks to the financial support of the Saalesparkasse Foundation and the State of Saxony-Anhalt, the Handel House Foundation has been able to acquire the manuscript score, thought lost, of Il Messia. This extremely important document is a veritable treasure for the reception history of the oratorio: it was the first performance of this famed oratorio outside Great Britain or Ireland and predates by a long time the performances in Berlin and Vienna and the arrangement by W. A. Mozart. The Florentine performances are proof of how Handel’s music had spread through Europe even in the 18th century. Alessandro de Marchi has accepted the task of directing the performance. Sung by outstanding soloists, this wonderful work had its much-acclaimed premiere at the 2022 Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. Now you can also attend this very special performance in Halle!
