Handel Festival 2022 - 100 Years of Handel Festivals in Halle

From May 27 to June 12, 2022, the Handel Festival will celebrate a major anniversary: the first “Hallisches Händelfest” took place from May 25 to 28, 1922, and provided a multifaceted program primarily with actors from the city. 100 years later, the enthusiasm for Handel’s music continues unabated worldwide. As the only German Handel festival at authentic locations and with more than 80 program points, many visitors from near and far are expected in Halle. The largest and oldest music festival in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, with around 58,000 visitors a year before the pandemic, offers a program consisting of two program pillars: In total, all 9 concert, opera and oratorio programs, including the ceremonial lecture and festive service of 1922, will be adapted for the 2022 Handel Festival, and internationally famous Handel Prize winners will lend the festival a special glamour in a wide variety of events.

After the cancellation of the Handel Festivals 2020 and 2021 due to the Corona virus, many international stars such as the sopranos Emőke Baráth, Roberta Mameli, Emmanuelle de Negri and Giulia Semenzato, the countertenors Xavier Sabata and Iestyn Davies or the writer Donna Leon and the conductor and harpsichordist William Christie are expected alongside the Handel Prize winners. Opera performances at the restored Goethe Theater in Bad Lauchstädt and the Carl Maria von Weber Theater in Bernburg, as well as at the Halle Opera, round out the program. The very close integration of science and practice is also a traditional feature of the Handel Festival in Handel’s birthplace. In addition to the festival lecture, a scientific conference will be held in the Handel House. Furthermore, visitors can expect intercultural and cross-genre concerts, such as Baroque Lounges, a poetry slam, family events, and the traditional open-air events in the Galgenbergschlucht (Galgenberg Gorge).
