After the successful co-production of Handel’s Atalanta with the Donaufestwochen im Strudengau festival in 2019, the cooperative venture continues in 2021-2022 with Handel’s Siroe, Re di Persia. Director Kobie van Rensburg, who together with Bluebox has developed an innovative, multimedia production style all of his own, and the renowned L’Orfeo Barockorchester are again part of the project. Betrayal, revenge, disputed inheritances and forbidden love at the court of Persia – this explosive mixture is the theme of the libretto by Pietro Metastasio, which G. F. Handel colourfully set to music in 1728 for the ninth season of the Royal Academy of Music.  For Kobie van Rensburg, the essence of any theatre performance is the dividing line between reality and appearance. G. F. Handel did not set out to “show a realistic image of Persia, but a world of fantasy, a world in which we can lose ourselves”, the director is convinced, “and the possibilities of multimedia techniques enable the audience to experience ‘Baroque stage magic’ in a contemporary form”.

Harpischordist Erich Traxler will conduct L’Orfeo Barockorchester and an international line-up of singers, including the two countertenors Clint van der Linde and Nicholas Hariades, as well as Matthias Helm (baritone), Amelie Müller (soprano) and Annastina Malm (mezzo soprano). The performance at the Donaufestwochen was acclaimed by both the audience and press.
