The Portuguese orchestra Divino Sospiro was scheduled to appear in Halle in 2020. Now the musicians and choir will be making their Halle debut at last. They have been recruited for a special performance of Handel’s Messiah: W. A. Mozart’s version of the Messiah sung in German is famous, but rarely performed. Arranged by Mozart in 1789 on a commission by the great admirer of Baroque music Gottfried van Swieten, this radical recasting of Handel’s most famous oratorio included, not least, opulent, modern woodwind parts. The renowned Gulbenkian Choir from Lisbon and their artistic director Massimo Mazzeo are proven specialists of historically informed performance practice. They are celebrated all over Europe with riotous applause, bravos and standing ovations. The soloists, who have appeared on stages of international renown, including the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival and the BBC Proms, are excellent and promise unforgettable musical enjoyment.
