At the music festival devoted to him in Halle, Handel’s Messiah, including the well-known Hallelujah Chorus, is traditionally performed by internationally renowned musicians. In 2019, this is set to be a very British occasion. Since its founding by Christopher Hogwood, who directed the ensemble for decades and led them to international fame, the Academy of Ancient Music has been one of the most important ensembles of historically informed performance practice. The Tenebrae Choir, also from the UK, was founded in 2001. Although it cannot look back on such a long history, the choir, which is directed by Nigel Short, has for the past few years been a part of the “champions league” of international choirs thanks to its power of expression, passion and precision. The UK newspaper The Times found only one, amazed word for the choir’s performance: “phenomenal”. Expectations of this “British Messiah” are correspondingly high!
