For three days, speakers from the USA, the UK, Austria and Germany will be exploring Handel’s female characters in their historical context and that of current controversy, and comparing and contrasting them with those in works by his contemporaries. The objective is to discern whether Handel’s complex view of female characters was an isolated phenomenon or typical of the time, since he has some aspects in common with his contemporaries while also displaying significant differences.
