In the Baroque period, animals were not only actual living things; they also had a strongly allegorical presence both in the visual arts as well as in music. In G. F. Handel’s operas and oratorios, an astonishing number of animals occur, where they characterise a hero’s virtues, a villain’s vices or a lover’s passion. Donna Leon and Annett Renneberg, who is familiar to a broad television audience from her role as Signorina Elettra Zorzi in the film versions of Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti novels, will read the texts, after which Handel’s arias will be performed by outstanding singers, the Latvian-born Inga Kalna and the Swedish-born Ann Hallenberg, and the Italian Baroque orchestra, Il Pomo d’Oro.
