The festival concludes with yet another concentrate of woman-power. You can look forward to a wide range of strong emotions: the lilting but solemn entry of the legendary Queen of Sheba, the tragedy of the power-obsessed tyrant Athalia and Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor. The grand closing concert, which since 1952 has been held in the romantic Galgenberg Gorge, traditionally ends with Handel’s Fireworks Music and a spectacular fireworks display. This year once again, Staatskapelle Halle will be providing the music. Peter Kopp, the new vice-chancellor of the Halle an der Saale Protestant University of Sacred Music will be making his first appearance at the festival. Thanks to his work with the Dresden Kreuzchor and Vocal Concert, he has extensive experience of choral and Baroque music. With this glittering conclusion to the Handel Festival, the thousands of visitors, if they are not already enthusiastically on their feet, never fail to jump up as the colourful rockets soar into the starry sky.
