On “Sunday, the 28th of May 1922, at 12 noon”, the Handel Society held a chamber concert of works by G. F. Handel in the university auditorium. Like most ambitious musicians of his time, as a young man the composer took the opportunity of travelling to the then Mecca of music, Italy. There, he got to grips with the Italian cantata as well as Italian instrumental music, because Italy drew not only the best singers, but also outstanding instrumental musicians and composers. The 1922 concert centred on two cantatas that Handel composed in Italy.
Since 1982, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin has been one of the world’s top chamber orchestras performing in a historically informed style. Roberta Mameli, with her wonderfully rich-toned soprano, and Jonathan de la Paz Saenz, who has made a name for himself above all as a singer of lieder, are the renowned vocal soloists taking part in this concert reconstruction in the historical venue.
