The Franco-American conductor and harpsichordist William Christie, an absolute authority on Baroque music, and the members of his excellent ensemble Les Arts Florissants will perform this chamber concert of works by G. F. Handel. The duo cantata Aminta e Filide, first performed on 14 July 1708 at the home of the Marquis Ruspoli, the head of the Arcadian Academy, forms the centrepiece of the concert. Ruspoli was one of the richest men in Italy at the start of the 18th century, and as such probably the most important music patron of his time. He commissioned Handel, as a composer and musician, to compose the cantata. As so often in the pastoral cantatas of the Arcadians, the theme is that of spurned love. The heroine Phyllis turns Aminta down, because love means nothing to her, her freedom everything. Ana Vieira-Leita and Deborah Cachet offer a stirring and enthralling interpretation of this pastoral cantata, accompanied by Maestro Christie himself on the harpsichord.
